The announcement was made by IPS President-Elect Prof. Rajendra M. Gade, who described Prof. Gangawane as “a scientist who consistently bridged rigorous agricultural research with the real needs of farmers and rural communities.” The Award and Oration, which will commence in the 2026–2027 academic year, has been established with an initial endowment of ₹10 lakh donated by Mrs. Sushila Gangawane. The family has further pledged ₹90 lakh to support young scientist recognition, research encouragement and related academic initiatives in Prof. Gangawane’s memory, bringing the total family support for these initiatives to ₹1 crore.

The initiative has been conceived and shaped with the support and guidance of senior members of the scientific and academic community, including IPS President Dr. R. Viswanathan, IPS Secretary Dr. Malkhan Singh Gurjar, Professors and Heads of Botany Departments Dr. Vikram Khilare and Dr. Shivaji Kamble, and the Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University, Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni. Together they share the objective of promoting excellence in plant pathology and agricultural sciences nationwide.

Prof. L. V. Gangawane was widely respected across Indian agricultural science for his unique ability to combine scientific rigour with practical, farmer-oriented research across a career spanning more than four decades. Born into an agrarian family, he made pioneering contributions in rhizosphere microbiology, fungicide resistance, integrated disease management, biofertilizer technology and sustainable agriculture, with particular relevance to semi-arid farming systems.

As Head of the Department of Botany at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and later as Emeritus Professor, he played a pivotal role in strengthening research infrastructure in plant pathology and microbiology and in mentoring successive generations of scientists and researchers. His international engagements included research collaborations and invited lectures at institutions such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London), the University of Cambridge, the University of Bristol, Swansea University, Cairo University, Kasetsart University (Thailand), the University of Malaya (Malaysia) and Al Ain University (UAE). The Government of India also selected him under its Cultural Exchange Programme to deliver scientific lectures in Egypt.

Notably, during the 1970s; a period when advanced facilities for human viral research were limited in India, Prof. Gangawane experimentally demonstrated that the Hepatitis-B virus could be propagated on tobacco leaves. This work opened new experimental pathways for subsequent virological and vaccine-related research and was acknowledged in the internationally renowned medical journal The Lancet in 1976.

A prolific scholar, Prof. Gangawane authored more than 280 research papers and developed recognised methods for controlling seed-borne diseases in pigeon pea. Deeply committed to public outreach, he appeared on Doordarshan’s “Aamchi Mati Aamchi Manse,” delivered talks on All India Radio, and wrote Marathi-language scientific literature to communicate agricultural science to farming communities. He guided 42 Ph.D. scholars and served as President of the Indian Phytopathological Society in 2006. His contributions were recognised with several honours, including the Maharashtra State Ideal Teacher Award (2002), the Prof. M. S. Pavgi Award and the P. R. Verma Award.

In the foreword to the national seminar volume Biofertilizer Technology Transfer, renowned agricultural scientist and architect of India’s Green Revolution, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, wrote: “We owe a deep sense of gratitude to Dr. L. V. Gangawane for this labour of love.”

The Award and Oration have been designed to uphold the values Prof. Gangawane embodied throughout his life; scientific excellence, translational agricultural research, institution building, mentorship and dedicated service to farming communities. IPS stated that the initiative is expected to evolve into a distinguished national platform encouraging young scientists working in sustainable agriculture, plant health and food security.

The 12th International Samudra Manthan Awards 2025 organised by the Samudra Manthan Foundation, supported by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India, with Bhandarkar Publications as the Knowledge Partner was held with grandeur and deep national spirit at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. 

The ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd.), Governor of Mizoram, who attended as the Chief Guest. Capt. Vivek Bhandarkar, Director of the Samudra Manthan Foundation and CEO of Bhandarkar Publications, opened the 12th International Samudra Manthan Awards 2025 by extending a warm welcome to the Chief Guest.

In his inspiring address, the Hon’ble Governor spoke with conviction about opportunity which is the single most powerful catalyst capable of transforming both individuals and nations. He noted that while India possesses immense strengths, “our only real gap lies in not striking at the right opportunity at the right time,” a powerful reminder that timing, boldness, and preparedness are indispensable. Drawing focus to India’s Northeast, the Hon Mizoram Governor delivered a stirring pitch highlighting the region’s extraordinary potential, its low power costs, natural abundance, talent-rich youth, inland waterway possibilities, and an ecosystem ripe for maritime and logistics expansion. He emphasized that “whatever you seek, be it talent, resources, resilience you will find in the Northeast,” urging the maritime sector to embrace the region as a strategic partner in India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat. His remarks drew a warm, appreciative response from the audience, marking a significant moment in positioning the Northeast within the country’s maritime narrative. He encouraged the maritime community to look toward the Northeast not as a distant region but as a frontier of possibility, partnership, and prosperity.

He reflected on the overwhelming success of the two-day symposium on Oil Spill Recovery and Salvage Operations, describing the packed halls, active participation, and high-quality discussions as proof of India’s maritime sector being alert, agile, and ready to lead with global standards in preparedness, environmental safety, and response capability. Capt. Bhandarkar highlighted the Foundation’s guiding philosophy of “Samudra Manthanasya Amrutam Paropakaaram”, stating that the true nectar drawn from the churning of the seas lies in collective service and societal benefit. He reiterated that the Samudra Manthan Foundation has grown into a movement of collaboration, discourse, and social commitment. He also expressed pride in the Samudra Manthan Foundation’s North-East outreach initiative under the Directorate General of Shipping’s “Sagar Mein Samman” programme. By reaching youth and women of the Eight Sisters (8 Northeastern States), the Foundation ensured that maritime opportunities transcend coastlines and become accessible to every Indian. Acknowledging the Directorate General of Shipping under Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Capt. Bhandarkar praised their leadership in driving safety, sustainability, and seafarer welfare. A touching moment of the evening was the felicitation of Capt.Vivek Bhandarkar and Ms. Bharati Bhandarkar by the Hon’ble Governor, marking 50 glorious years of Bhandarkar Publications. A short audio-visual presentation was showcased during the ceremony, paying tribute to the extraordinary legacy of Prof. K. R. Bhandarkar, whose pioneering contribution laid the foundation for maritime publishing in India. The film highlighted how his vision, educational commitment, and groundbreaking initiatives transformed access to maritime knowledge, making professional literature accessible and affordable for generations of Indian seafarers. His pioneering spirit continues to inspire the institution’s journey even today.

The Jury Chairman, Shri Rajeeva Sinha, IAS (Retd.), Advisor (JNPA) and eminent industry expert, reaffirmed that the awards are based purely on merit, balanced with the spirit of encouraging emerging contributors. He quoted, “When the great scorer writes against your name, he writes not whether you won or lost, but how you played the game,” reminding everyone that participation itself is a mark of honour in such a competitive and vibrant industry.

Since its inception, the International Samudra Manthan Awards has honoured excellence through the symbolic framework of Sixteen Jewels, inspired by the treasures that emerged from the legendary Samudra Manthan or the Churning of the mythical Milky Ocean. Staying true to this legacy, the 2025 edition celebrated a wide spectrum of achievements across India’s maritime and logistics ecosystem, recognising organisations whose contributions reflect innovation, resilience, and industry-wide impact.

In the shipping category, honours were presented to both Indian and international leaders who continue to steer the sector forward. The Shipping Corporation of India received the award for Shipping Company of the Year (Indian – Public Sector), while The Great Eastern Shipping Company was recognised as Shipping Company of the Year (Indian – Private Sector). Among global operators, Maersk Fleet Management and Technology India Pvt. Ltd.; CMA CGM Agencies India Pvt. Ltd.; and Ocean Network Express (India) Pvt. Ltd. were acknowledged for their excellence and operational leadership. JSW Shipping & Logistics Pvt. Ltd. was celebrated as Shipping Company of the Year – Coastal, reflecting remarkable growth in India’s coastal movement segment.

In the ports category, several major port authorities earned recognition for their outstanding performance. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority was honoured as Major Port of the Year for its exceptional container throughput and infrastructure leadership. The Deendayal Port Authority was recognised as a pioneer in Green Hydrogen Transformation, while the Paradip Port Authority received the award for Outstanding Bulk Cargo Performance. The New Mangalore Port Authority was celebrated as the Fastest-Growing Port in Southern India as it marked its Golden Jubilee this year and JSW Jaigarh Port Ltd. was named Non-Major Port of the Year.

In the terminal category, accolades went to leading operators shaping efficiency and productivity across India’s maritime gateways. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. Mundra Port; PSA Mumbai; and Haldia Container Terminal were all honoured as Shipping Terminals of the Year, acknowledging their role in world-class handling, technology adoption, and operational excellence.

The evening also honoured outstanding women achievers under the Star Women in Maritime honours, celebrating leaders who are strengthening the maritime sector, breaking barriers, and inspiring inclusivity.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of Special Awards, recognising exceptional individuals across maritime and allied sectors.
Capt. Mahesh Yadav, Director of Marine Education & Training, FOSMA Maritime Institute & Research Organisation, was honoured as Mentor of the Year for his legendary role in shaping future generations of seafarers through dedicated training, guidance, and excellence in maritime education.

Mr. S. M. Rai, a revered senior member of the Institute of Marine Engineers (India), was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades-long contribution to ship engineering, maritime standards, and professional leadership. An audio-visual clip played before the felicitation offered a moving glimpse into Shri S. M. Rai’s remarkable journey and his decades of steadfast service to the maritime fraternity. In his characteristically humble acceptance remarks, Shri Rai kept his words brief yet heartfelt. He expressed deep gratitude to the industry for every opportunity it has given him to contribute and serve, affirming his unwavering commitment to continue supporting the sector in every possible way. He extended his thanks to the younger generation, senior leaders, colleagues, and the wider maritime community for their constant encouragement throughout his career.

Prof. Dr. Tanuja Kaushik, Dean Academic Affairs, Gujarat Maritime University, received the Woman Achiever of the Year Award and Shri Haresh Lalwani, Joint Managing Director, Sun Logistics, was presented the Late Prof. K. R. Bhandarkar Memorial Award.

A spectrum of honours drawn from across the maritime and allied sectors, symbolically equivalent to the treasures that emerged during Samudra Manthan along with the gems.

Mumbai (Special Correspondent) : Renowned Mumbai-based photojournalist and journalist Imtiaz Shaikh has been conferred with the Special Journalism Award by the Maharashtra Urdu Academy. The honour was presented during the Academy’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, marking 50 years since its establishment. The award includes a cash prize of ₹15,000 and a trophy.

Imtiaz Shaikh, who has been associated with Mumbai Urdu News for many years, has earned a distinguished reputation in the field of visual journalism. His photographs have appeared in several national and international newspapers and magazines, earning widespread recognition. Known for his dedication and courage, Shaikh notably captured powerful images during the Mumbai terror attacks, risking his life to document the tragedy.

Over his two-decade-long career, Imtiaz Shaikh has worked with prominent media organisations such as Mumbai Urdu News, Do Bajay Dopahar, Urdu Times, PTI, Mid-Day, Getty Images, Anadolu Agency (Turkey), Gujarat Samachar, Sun TV, and The Times of India.

In recognition of his exceptional journalistic contributions, he has previously received seven awards from various reputed institutions, including the Bombay Press Club and Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

Congratulating him on this achievement, Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister Adv. Manikrao Kokate and Urdu Academy CEO S. Shoaib Hashmi lauded Shaikh’s remarkable service to Urdu journalism and photo reporting.

Bengaluru, India- 08 October  2025 : Mantra4Change’s flagship school transformation initiative, Samartha has been honoured with a 2025 Don Norman Design Award (DNDA) in the Organisation category. The award recognises Samartha’s pioneering use of humanity-centered design (HCD+) to improve public education and celebrates Mantra4Change’s belief that schools transform through empowering people - school leaders, teachers, parents and students, rather than by mandates.

The Mantra4Change team will receive the honour at the DNDA Summit, to be held in Singapore from November 19–21, 2025.

Samartha guides stakeholders in collaboratively identifying school challenges, uncovering root causes and co-designing solutions. This collaborative, HCD-driven approach “places leadership in the hands of stakeholders” to create ownership-driven ecosystems that enrich learning for every child.

The Don Norman Design Award is an international nonprofit accolade inspired by design pioneer Don Norman. It honours projects and programs that address community challenges with empathy, sustainability and innovation. DNDA aligns its criteria with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, requiring that the initiatives it honors have a measurable, positive impact on people’s lives. In particular, the Organisation Award recognises groups that are making a difference for the communities they serve. Selected by a global panel of judges, organizations must demonstrate how design can drive societal progress, address major issues outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and foster equity and sustainability. DNDA’s five HCD+ principles, namely - solving root causes, considering entire ecosystems, long-term systems thinking, iterative refinement, and designing with (and by) the community, are reflected throughout the Samartha program’s design.

Under Samartha, district and block mentors support school leaders in building sustainable school improvement plans. Students are given opportunities to lead club activities, anchor activity-based morning assemblies, and design teaching-learning materials to apply their learning and share with peers, fostering a culture of peer-to-peer support. Teachers conduct focused remedial sessions to ensure every child receives the support they need, while engaging in parent-teacher meetings creates meaningful spaces for parents to become equal partners in their children’s education. The activities have helped encourage the development of social-emotional skills, while parents serve as active partners, and officials collaborate to embed successful practices system-wide. Learning Circles and Pragati Hejje showcases bring stakeholders together to share best practices and celebrate progress. 

By aligning with DNDA’s HCD+ ethos, Samartha embodies the principle of solving core issues (not just symptoms) in the entire school ecosystem. Its co-creative model—iteratively prototyping solutions with the community—matches DNDA’s emphasis on community-driven design. This participatory, systemic approach has helped transform government schools into vibrant ecosystems of ownership and collaboration.

Receiving the DNDA is a major validation of Mantra4Change’s impact. The award places Samartha alongside global leaders in humanity-centered social innovation and highlights the importance of empathetic design in public education. As a recognised Education award laureate, Mantra4Change’s work is seen as a model for building sustainable, equitable learning environments. Mumbai : Mr. Asit Kumarr Modi, founder of Neela Film Productions and creator of the iconic television show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC), was honored at the Sony S3 Honour Awards for his visionary leadership in driving initiatives centered around Sustainability, Safety, and Security. This recognition celebrates the production house’s unwavering commitment to creating a safer, greener, and more efficient production environment, setting benchmarks for the entertainment industry.

The TMKOC set achieved an outstanding score of 80 out of 100 in the S3 guidelines assessment, highlighting its commitment to hazard-free operations and environmentally conscious practices. This recognition reflects the adoption of innovative strategies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fostering a culture of sustainability. From reducing the use of paper cups, plastic bottles, and single-use batteries to providing reusable stainless steel bottles and cups for the crew, the production has made significant strides in creating a sustainable work environment. Additionally, waste segregation, food waste monitoring, tissue consumption reduction, and hygiene promotion are prioritized to achieve long-term sustainability goals.

The production team’s active cooperation with on-ground Health & Safety Officers has been instrumental in creating a safety-first culture that minimizes hazards such as slips, trips, and falls, making the set a benchmark for the industry.

On November 13, 2024, the Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) team visited the TMKOC set to present the Sustainability S3 Work Appreciation Certificate to the crew, acknowledging their remarkable efforts in aligning with the S3 guidelines. India, 19 November 2024 : The Alternativa Film Awards & Festival 2024 (AFAF 2024), a global non-profit film initiative founded by international technology company inDrive, has unveiled this year’s shortlisted films and juries during. Out of 25 shortlisted films - 13 full-length and 12 shorts - 2 Indian filmmakers were selected under the short film category.

Alternativa Film Project is designed to support and promote filmmakers and discover new voices from developing film industries, providing greater international visibility to filmmakers whose work is aimed to bring positive social impact to make the world a better place.

The Alternativa Film Awards received 680 eligible entries from 33 countries and 40 submissions were from India. The 2 Indian shortlisted films were Bird of a Different Feather by Manohara K and The Adamane Girl by Vinothraj PS.

All shortlisted titles will be presented to the public at the Alternativa Film Festival, which will run from November 22 to 28 in Yogyakarta. Festival guests will be able to attend free screenings and participate in impactful discussions, engaging audiences in dialogue about the nominated films and the significant social topics they address.

In addition to this, the Alternativa Film Awards will also be hosting its Industry Days event (27–29 November), a 3-day professional program designed to unite key players in the international impact arena. It will serve as a meeting point for the film industries of Southeast Asia and beyond, aiming to empower filmmakers and producers from the region through networking.

Mumbai : Honourable Speaker, 18^th Lok Sabha Shri Om Birla was the Chief Guest at the 7^th Edition of The CSR Journal Excellence Awards 2024 hosted on the 30^th of September, 2024, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. As it has been since the very inception, this year also, the theme for our awards was ‘India First’ with a focus on Women Empowerment.

Addressing a gathering of over 600 guests including senior bureaucrats, public representatives, social activists, youth leaders, artists, members of India Inc. and meritorious students representing the future of our nation at the 7^th edition of The CSR Journal Excellence Awards, Honourable Speaker, 18^th Lok Sabha Shri Om Birla stated, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and everyone who are working hard to bring a smile on the faces of the underprivileged people and trying to make their lives better. Hyderabad, India, September 21, 2024: In a prestigious ceremony held at Hyderabad this evening, the International Buddha Peace Award and Gaurav Shri Samman were Graces by Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, the Hon’ble Governor of Telangana. The event, organized by the Maitry Peace Foundation, celebrated individuals who have made remarkable contributions to peace, social progress, and community welfare.

One of the evening's distinguished honorees was Mustafa Yusufali Gom,, the esteemed Managing Director of Care Takers Exterior and Interior Pvt Ltd. Mr. Gom was honoured with the International Peace Award 2024, recognizing his impactful social activism and exemplary leadership in the construction industry. His dedication to fostering community development, alongside his professional achievements, sets him apart as a visionary leader who integrates business with compassion.

The evening commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, marking the formal inauguration of the event. Bollywood diva Isha Koppikar, who was also the chief celebrity guest of the evening, said, “Very happy new year to all of you here.
