Umar Khalid has spent more than five years in prison. His trial has not yet meaningfully begun.

He was arrested in September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act — India's harshest anti-terror law — accused of conspiring to incite the communal violence that swept parts of Delhi in February 2020. The riots left 53 people dead, most of them Muslims, and took place amid massive protests against a controversial citizenship law.

The evidence against him? Speeches he gave at peaceful protests. WhatsApp group chats. And facial recognition matches that placed him — or someone who looked like him — at various locations.

On January 5, 2026, India's Supreme Court denied Khalid bail, ruling that he played a "central and formative role" in the alleged conspiracy. Five other accused in the same case were granted bail, having spent years in jail without trial. But Khalid and fellow activist Sharjeel Imam were told they could reapply after one year.

One more year. After five already served.

"We can be kept in jail for years, without those framing us needing to prove anything," Khalid wrote from Tihar Jail on completing two years of detention. "This is the power of UAPA."

The 2% Problem

The technology that helped identify Khalid and hundreds of others has a documented accuracy problem that should disqualify it from any serious evidentiary role.

In 2018, Delhi Police testified to the Delhi High Court that their facial recognition system had an accuracy rate of just 2% when trying to trace missing children. The system was so poor that officials admitted it often couldn't distinguish between boys and girls.

Two percent.

Yet this same technology was deployed aggressively after the 2020 riots. Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament that 1,922 perpetrators — comprising 73.3% of those arrested — had been identified through facial recognition technology.

The results have been devastating for the accused — and embarrassing for the prosecution. More than 80% of riot cases heard so far have resulted in acquittals or discharges. The facial recognition matches that seemed so definitive have crumbled under scrutiny. Witnesses have turned hostile. Evidence has fallen apart.

But the years in jail cannot be given back.

The Investigation

An investigation by The Wire and the Pulitzer Center found that many riot accused were arrested "solely on the basis of facial recognition," without solid corroborating evidence or credible public witness accounts.

Mohammad Shahid: Spent 17 months in jail before formal charges were even filed.

Ali: Arrested in March 2020, still in pre-trial detention more than four and a half years later. Arrested "solely on the basis of facial recognition."

Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, and others: Activists who spent years in jail, finally granted bail in January 2026 by the Supreme Court after the lower courts repeatedly denied them.

The pattern of arrests reveals something beyond technology failure. Of the 18 activists charged under anti-terrorism laws in connection with the riots, 16 were Muslim. The police framed peaceful protests against a discriminatory citizenship law as a "larger conspiracy" to incite violence.

Meanwhile, video evidence exists of police forcing five injured Muslim men to sing the national anthem while they lay bleeding on the ground. One of them, Faizan, 23, died two days later. No prosecution has resulted.

Kapil Mishra, the BJP leader recorded making speeches that many believe incited the violence, is now an elected official serving as a cabinet minister.

The Surveillance State

India has spent Rs 9.6 billion on facial recognition technology. The National Automated Facial Recognition System (NAFRS) is being built for nationwide deployment — a system that will be able to identify any face captured on any camera across the country.

No privacy impact assessment was conducted before the Delhi Police deployed their system. No audit of accuracy. No oversight mechanism.

"If you are a Dalit woman in India," says Vidushi Marda of Article 19, "the nature and extent to which you are under surveillance are far more than an upper-caste Hindu man. There is a disproportionate impact on communities that have been historically marginalized."

The Internet Freedom Foundation has called for a three-year moratorium on biometric facial recognition systems. Research has consistently shown that such systems perform worse on darker-skinned faces, on women, and on minority populations — precisely the groups most likely to be subjected to surveillance.

Criminal databases in India disproportionately include Muslims, Dalits, and Indigenous people — the legacy of colonial-era "criminal tribes" designations and ongoing discriminatory policing. When facial recognition systems are trained on these databases, they inherit and amplify those biases.

"Policing has always been casteist in India," says Nikita Sonavane of the Criminal Justice and Police Accountability Project. "And data has been used to entrench caste-based hierarchies. Any new AI-based predictive policing system will likely only perpetuate the legacies of caste discrimination."

The Legal Trap

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has become the weapon of choice for silencing dissent. Under UAPA, the normal presumption of innocence is effectively reversed. Courts are required only to see whether allegations appear "prima facie true" — not whether they are proven beyond doubt.

Bail becomes extraordinarily difficult. Accused can be held in pre-trial detention almost indefinitely. The process itself becomes the punishment.

The Financial Action Task Force noted in 2024 that delays in UAPA prosecutions are "resulting in a high number of pending cases and accused persons in judicial custody waiting for cases to be tried and concluded."

UAPA's conviction rate is just 2.2%, according to National Crime Records Bureau data. The vast majority of those arrested are eventually acquitted — but often only after years in prison.

In the Delhi riots case, the prosecution's "larger conspiracy" theory has faced consistent criticism. Defense lawyers argue there is no direct evidence linking the accused to acts of violence, no recovery of weapons, and much of the case rests on hearsay, selective witness accounts, and interpretation of speeches and chats.

"Chakka jams and other forms of non-violent agitation are part of India's democratic lexicon," Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal argued before the Supreme Court. They "cannot be elevated to UAPA-level offences merely because they make authorities uncomfortable."

The Architecture of Presumption

Shekhar Natarajan sees facial recognition as deployed in India as "the architecture of presumed guilt."

"The system begins with a match and works backward," he explains. "It does not ask: What was this person doing? Were they a participant or a bystander? Were they there at all, or did the algorithm make an error? It cannot ask these questions. It only sees faces — and it sees them imperfectly."

In Angelic Intelligence, the architecture would force different questions:

An agent embodying nyaya (justice) would require corroborating evidence before any action with life-altering consequences. A facial match alone — especially from a system with documented 2% accuracy — would never be sufficient.

An agent embodying satya (truth) would flag the technology's known limitations. It would require disclosure of accuracy rates, training data biases, and error margins. It would not allow a 2% accurate system to present itself as definitive.

An agent embodying sahana (patience) would demand pause before irreversible actions. Arrest, detention, the destruction of a person's life and reputation — these require certainty that current systems cannot provide.

And an agent embodying sama (equanimity) would check for disparate impact. It would ask: Are certain communities being targeted more than others? Is the system's deployment fair across populations?

The current system has no sahana. It has only efficiency, measured in arrests made, cases filed, conspiracy theories constructed.

Umar Khalid remains in jail. The algorithm made matches. The courts found the matches sufficient for continued detention. But the algorithm cannot be cross-examined. The algorithm cannot be held accountable. The algorithm cannot give back five years of a young man's life.

Let’s take inventory of what the men in the Epstein files had.

Collectively, the tech figures documented across 3.5 million pages of DOJ files controlled more wealth than most nations. They had private islands, private jets, private chefs, private security, and private access to every institution on Earth. They had Ivy League educations, tenured professorships, endowed chairs, and research labs with budgets larger than some countries’ GDP. They attended post-conviction dinners and called it networking. They built the most consequential technology in human history with the moral depth of a spreadsheet.

They had islands. They had billions. They had everything except the one thing that matters.

They had no virtue. And it shows in every algorithm they ship.

THE INVENTORY OF NOTHING

Now take inventory of what Shekhar Natarajan had.

Bridging the research-industry gap

The quality and scale of training data are critical to delivering relevant recommendations on platforms like streaming services, social networks, short-form video apps, and e-commerce marketplaces. However, research in recommender systems has lagged behind rapidly advancing fields like large language models, largely due to limited access to large-scale datasets. Effective recommendation models require terabytes of behavioral data, which commercial platforms possess but rarely share publicly.

Researchers are often left with small, outdated datasets that fail to capture the complexity of modern usage: 

• Spotify’s Million Playlists dataset is too small for commercial-scale recommender systems.

• Netflix Prize dataset, with ~17,000 items and date-only timestamps, limits temporal modeling and large-scale research.

• Criteo 1TB Click Logs dataset lacks proper documentation and identifiers, and focuses narrowly on ad clicks.

“Recommender systems are inherently tied to sensitive data. Companies can only publish recommender system datasets publicly after exhaustive anonymization, a resource-intensive process that’s slowed open innovation,” explains Nikolai Savushkin, Head of Recommender Systems at Yandex.

This data scarcity creates a gap: models that excel in academic settings often underperform in real-world applications. Efforts to integrate recommender systems with advanced architectures are also constrained by the lack of suitable training data.

About the Yambda dataset

Yambda addresses recommender system challenges by providing a massive, anonymized dataset from its music streaming service with ~28 million monthly users. This dataset provides insights into how users interact with the content offered by Yandex Music, which is known for its sophisticated recommendation system My Wave that tailors the listening experience to the tastes of each user. To protect privacy, all user and track data is anonymized, using numeric identifiers to meet privacy standards.

Key features of the dataset:

• 4.79 billion anonymized user interactions collected over 10 months.

• Data from 1 million users and anonymized descriptors for 9.39 million tracks.

• Includes two feedback types: implicit interactions (listens) and explicit interactions (likes, dislikes, and their removal).

• Offers audio embeddings (vector representations generated via convolutional neural networks) and anonymized information about tracks.

• Features an "is_organic" flag marking whether users discovered tracks independently or through recommendations, enabling deeper behavioral analysis.

• All events are timestamped, which supports the analysis of user behavior over time and allows models to be evaluated under conditions that closely resemble real-world use.

The dataset is released in Apache Parquet format, compatible with distributed processing systems such as Spark or Hadoop and analytical libraries like Pandas and Polars.

“Yambda empowers researchers to test innovative hypotheses and businesses to build smarter recommender systems. Ultimately, users benefit — finding the perfect song, product, or service effortlessly,” notes Nikolai Savushkin.

Dataset versions and evaluation

Available in three sizes — approximately 5 billion, 500 million, and 50 million events — the Yambda dataset accommodates researchers and developers with different needs and computational resource capacities. 

The dataset uses Global Temporal Split (GTS) for evaluation, a method that splits data by timestamps to preserve event sequences. Unlike Leave-One-Out, which removes the last positive interaction from each user’s history for testing, GTS avoids breaking temporal dependencies between training and test sets. This ensures a more realistic model testing — mimicking real-world conditions where future data is unavailable.

Baseline implementations include MostPop, DecayPop, ItemKNN, iALS, BPR, SANSA, and SASRec, providing benchmarks for comparing new recommender system approaches. These baselines are evaluated using standard metrics, including:

• NDCG@k (ranking quality)

• Recall@k (retrieval effectiveness)

• Coverage@k (catalog diversity)

October 28, 2024 : The Space Exploration & Research Agency (SERA) today announced research partnerships with Weill Cornell Medicine and the University of Austin (UATX) for its upcoming mission with Blue Origin to bring underrepresented nations to space. The mission’s crew of citizen astronauts will help conduct biomedical experiments during the spaceflight chosen and designed by the global public.

Historically, scientific research in space has been confined to narrow academic disciplines and limited to a few select countries. More than 80% of astronauts have come from just three countries. SERA is aiming to break down structural barriers to space and make spaceflight and scientific research more accessible and inclusive.

Earlier this year, SERA formed a strategic partnership with Blue Origin to purchase six seats

onboard a Blue Origin New Shepard rocket. Five of the seats are allocated to partner nations

that have never had an astronaut or very few. The sixth seat will be open to a person from any

partner nation. Anyone can apply and be selected by the voting public.

Now, SERA is announcing research partnerships with the Mason Lab at Weill Cornell Medicine and the Overbey Lab at the University of Austin (UATX), preeminent institutions in space research, that will empower the public to participate in scientific research during the mission. Each of the six seats will be allocated a series of both autonomous and astronaut-tended experiments. These experiments will focus on the effects of microgravity on human physiology, cell biology and fluid dynamics, to better understand the human experience in space.

Select experimental parameters will be predetermined to ensure scientifically meaningful insights. The public will use the Mission platform to put forward specific proposals to test their own hypotheses. The platform also includes an AI assistant trained on academic papers relevant to microgravity and the experiment themes to help those without traditional experience in space science to research and structure their submissions. Proposals will be evaluated by the partners to curate finalists for each seat, which will then be voted on by the public.

Earlier this year, SERA announced that India, Nigeria, and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will each be allotted a seat on the mission, marking a significant milestone for nations that have historically lacked access to space. This opportunity will pave the way for further scientific research, innovation, and advancement within these regions. The remaining seat assignments for underrepresented countries will be revealed later this year.

SERA’s first achievement toward making space accessible to all was demonstrated on June 4,

2022, when the company sent Victor Hespanha, a 28-year-old civil engineer from Minas Gerais,

Brazil, to space on NS-21, Blue Origin’s fifth crewed flight. He became the second Brazilian to

fly to space.

“Expanding the horizons of space discovery goes beyond the astronauts themselves,” said Sam Hutchison, Co-founder of SERA. “Building an inclusive space ecosystem also means pushing research forward and investigating topics that have been previously overlooked by national and corporate space interests – and bringing our entire community along for the ride.”

Bengaluru, 30^th September 2024 – In a rapidly evolving world where generational identities are shaped by culture and technology, new research has explored how generative AI models perceive Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. While these images may reflect some global stereotypes, there are also a few surprises along the way.

A joint research project conducted by AIport and Turing Post last month analyzed over 1200 AI-generated images across four different models—Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, YandexART, and ERNIE-ViLG. The findings revealed that, while some stereotypes persist, the AI-generated images for each generation have offered fascinating insights that are both relatable to an Indian audience and globally significant.

Boomers: A Reflection of Melancholy?

Traditionally, Boomers have been associated with conservative values and nostalgia for simpler times. This often translates into depictions of introspective and even melancholic individuals in AI-generated images. Midjourney, for instance, portrays Boomers as somber and reflective, with nearly 80% of its generated images showing Boomers looking pensive, bundled up, and wistfully gazing into the distance. This unexpected representation contrasts with the image of a content, retired generation.

Interestingly, the ERNIE-ViLG model, likely influenced by different cultural datasets, presented a more positive take, with over 90% of Boomers appearing to be smiling. This stark difference highlights how AI training datasets influence how generational identities are constructed visually.

Zoomers and Millennials: Diverse and Expressive

When it comes to Gen Z and Millennials, the AI models presented these generations as more colorful, diverse, and expressive. Zoomers, known for embracing individuality and inclusivity, were shown in dynamic, highly detailed scenarios emphasizing cultural diversity. This aligns with India’s younger generation, which is globally connected and values representation and identity.

While the typical stereotypes of job-hopping Millennials or avocado toast enthusiasts might not fully apply to Indian Millennials, the research shows a wider acceptance of diversity and fluidity across all the AI models. This points to an interesting convergence of cultural identity, where Indian Millennials and Gen Z are part of a larger, global narrative.

Beer as a Surprising Common Thread

One of the most unexpected insights from the study is the consistent presence of beer across all generations. Despite cultural differences and lifestyle variations, AI models generated images showing beer as a common element for Boomers, Millennials, Gen X, and Gen Z. This shared depiction suggests that some habits transcend both age and cultural boundaries, even if they don’t fully align with Indian consumption patterns.

Prompt Engineering and AI’s Societal Reflection

Neutral prompts like “a Millennial at work” or “a Boomer relaxing” were used to avoid introducing bias in the AI models. The resulting images give us a glimpse into how generative AI mirrors societal expectations—often shaped by the datasets and cultural nuances the models have been trained on. The stark contrasts in portrayals, such as the differences in Boomers’ expressions, reflect how AI is influenced by regional and cultural data.

“These images offer a new lens through which to explore how AI interprets generational identity,” says Hon. Lisa Sparks, Ph.D., Founding Dean, School of Communication, McGaw Endowed Professor in Behavioral Sciences, Chapman University. “For an Indian audience, this opens up discussions about how global AI models understand cultural identity and the extent to which their interpretations reflect our values or biases.”

The study examined the outputs of four globally recognized generative AI models, each with distinct aesthetic and cultural nuances, providing a comprehensive look at how each generation is portrayed visually. The selected models included Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, YandexART, and ERNIE-ViLG, offering diverse perspectives from different regions across the globe.

AI-generated images provide a fascinating window into how technology interprets generational differences, both globally and locally.
