2. Space Out Your Study Sessions
Cramming creates an illusion of mastery. Information feels fresh right after a late-night session, but it fades quickly because it was never given time to consolidate. Treating this as part of preparation, not an afterthought, removes a variable that has nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with unfamiliarity. That might mean simply taking one full practice test under real conditions: same device, same quiet room, no phone nearby, camera on, full attention on the screen for the entire duration.
4. Handle the Logistics Before Exam Day, Not During It
Online exams come with their own checklist, separate from the syllabus: a stable internet connection, a functioning webcam and microphone, valid identification ready to show, and the test window opened and tested ahead of time. Technical hiccups are rarely about knowledge, but they can cost real time and composure if they surface for the first time during the actual test.
Students preparing smarter run through this setup at least once beforehand – checking their connection, confirming their device meets requirements, and understanding what the identity verification and browser lockdown will look and feel like. It’s a small investment that means, on the day itself, all the mental energy goes toward the questions rather than toward troubleshooting.
5. Use Data to Study What Matters
Not all topics deserve equal attention. Some carry more marks, some appear more frequently, and some are simply weaker areas for a given student. Preparing smarter means identifying these priorities early rather than working through material in the order it appears in a textbook.
Tracking performance across practice attempts – which topics consistently trip you up, which question types take the longest, where careless errors happen – turns preparation into a targeted process. When detailed results and reports are available soon after a practice test, this review can happen while the material is still fresh, which makes the lessons stick far better than revisiting them days later.
6. Build in Rest and Recovery
Sleep, breaks, and downtime aren’t the opposite of productive studying – they’re part of it. Sleep plays an important role in memory consolidation, while breaks can help sustain attention during extended study periods. Students who protect their sleep and build short breaks into long study sessions tend to retain more per hour studied than those who push through fatigue, and they also tend to walk into a monitored exam calmer, which matters even more in a timed digital exam, where fatigue can affect concentration, reading speed and decision-making
7. Review Mistakes, Not Just Scores
A test score is a summary, not a lesson. The real learning happens when a student goes back through incorrect answers and asks why they got them wrong – a knowledge gap, a misread question, a careless slip, or a timing issue caused by the format itself. Each of these has a different fix. Treating every practice attempt as a diagnostic tool, rather than just a grade, is what turns repeated testing into steady improvement.
8. Use AI as a Tutor, Not an Answer Machine
The important media angle is the distinction between AI-assisted learning and AI-dependent learning. A Mumbai study, for example, found widespread awareness of AI among Class IX students but also concerns that students were using it to obtain quick answers rather than develop independent problem-solving skills.

Preparing smarter isn’t a single trick – it’s a shift from “how much time can I put in” to “how effectively am I using the time I have,” and from focusing only on content to also getting comfortable with the format the exam will take. Regular low-stakes practice, spaced learning, familiarity with a secure digital test environment, and honest review of mistakes all compound over weeks and months.
Students who prepare this way tend to need less last-minute cramming, feel steadier when the camera turns on and the timer starts, and perform more consistently – not because they worked harder, but because nothing about exam day caught them by surprise.
