Rare and Complex Pediatric Surgery Saves Infant’s Life at Kauvery Hospital, Salem

This rare congenital condition, known as a diaphragmatic hernia, is seldom seen and presents significant surgical challenges, especially in infants. The surgery lasted 4.5 hours and required meticulous precision. The medical team successfully repositioned the child’s stomach back into the abdominal cavity and repaired the diaphragmatic defect. Additionally, they addressed inflammation in the intestines, ensuring the infant’s complete recovery.

Following the surgery, the baby was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for continuous monitoring. Over the next 10 days, the medical team carefully evaluated the child’s digestive and respiratory functions. Gradual feeding was introduced to test and restore the baby’s normal digestive capabilities. Once the team confirmed stable recovery, the baby was discharged in good health, much to the relief and happiness of the parents.
